Das National Museum of Natural History (NMNH[1]; Nationalmuseum für Naturgeschichte) ist ein bedeutendes US-amerikanisches Naturkundemuseum an der National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Geschichte und Beschreibung
Das National Museum of Natural History wurde am 11. März 1910 eröffnet. Die Bauarbeiten wurden allerdings erst am 20. Juni 1911 fertiggestellt. Es ist eines der 19 Museen der Smithsonian Institution. Der Eintritt ist kostenfrei, und das Museum ist, mit Ausnahme des 25. Dezembers, ganzjährig geöffnet.
Mit 7,4 Millionen Besuchern war es 2009 das Museum mit den meisten Besuchern im Umfeld der Smithsonian-Museen.[2] Im Museumskomplex arbeiten 185 Naturwissenschaftler, die größte Anzahl von Wissenschaftlern in einem Museum weltweit.
Sammlungen und Exponate
Die Sammlungen umfassen etwa 500 Millionen Exemplare von Pflanzen, Tieren, Fossilien, Mineralien, Steinen und Meteoriten sowie menschlichen kulturellen Artefakten. Im November 2007 wurde das National Museum of Natural History durch einen Schmetterlingspavillon erweitert. Das Museum stellt u. a. auch den Hope-Diamanten aus.
