TerraPower ist ein auf die Entwicklung von Laufwellen-Reaktoren (TWR) und Flüssigsalzreaktoren (MSR) spezialisiertes US-amerikanisches Technologie- und Forschungsunternehmen.[1][2][3][4]

Unternehmen

TerraPower wird teilweise vom Energieministerium der Vereinigten Staaten und dem Los Alamos National Laboratory finanziert.[5] Einer der Hauptinvestoren von TerraPower ist Bill Gates (über Cascade Investment). Weitere Unternehmen sind Charles River Ventures und Khosla Ventures, die Berichten zufolge im Jahr 2010 35 Millionen US-Dollar investiert hatten. Im Dezember 2011 erwarb Reliance Industries eine Minderheitsbeteiligung.

Im September 2015 unterzeichnete TerraPower eine Vereinbarung mit der China National Nuclear Corporation über den Bau eines Prototyps einer 600-Megawatt-Reaktoreinheit in Xiapu in der chinesischen Provinz Fujian in den Jahren 2018 bis 2025.[6] Für die späten 2020er Jahre waren kommerzielle Kraftwerke mit einer Leistung von etwa 1150 MWe geplant.[7] Im Januar 2019 wurde jedoch bekannt gegeben, dass das Projekt im Zuge des Handelskonflikts zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten und der Volksrepublik China nicht von der Regierung unter Donald Trump genehmigt wurde.[8]

Seit 2019 arbeitet die Firma auch daran, Radionuklide für die Therapie mit α-Strahlung herzustellen.[9]

Im Jahr 2021 beschloss TerraPower den Bau eines Small Modular-Flüssigsalzreaktors in Wyoming.[10] Der Reaktor soll eine Leistung von 345 MW erreichen und mit einem Energiespeicher verbunden sein.[11]

Verwendung von Atommüll durch Laufwellen- und Flüssigsalzreaktoren

Durch die Verwendung von abgereichertem Uran als Brennstoff können Laufwellen- und Flüssigsalzreaktoren Atommüll-Lagerbestände reduzieren.

Nach Darstellung von TerraPower beherbergen die USA 700.000 Tonnen abgereichertes Uran, acht Tonnen des Urans könnte 2,5 Millionen Haushalte pro Jahr mit Strom versorgen. Mit den weltweit gelagerten Beständen, zirka 1,1 bis 1,5 Millionen Tonnen, könnten demzufolge 80 Prozent der Weltbevölkerung über ein Jahrtausend lang versorgt werden – auf dem gegenwärtigen (2012) Verbrauchsniveau für Strom eines durchschnittlichen Amerikaners.[12][13] Bis Nukleartechnik aus der Forschung in den Betrieb gehen, d. h. industriell gebraucht werden kann, vergehen erfahrungsgemäß Jahrzehnte.[14][15] Terra Power plant bis zum Jahr 2025 einen Forschungsreaktor gebaut zu haben.[14][15]

Auch in Flüssigsalzreaktoren kann statt angereichertem spaltbarem Material anderer Brennstoff verwendet werden, beispielsweise Thorium oder Atommüll.[16] Auf diese Weise könnte bis zu 95 Prozent des bereits abgebrannten weltweiten Brennstoffs aus heutigen Reaktoren recycelt werden.[15][14] Es bliebe lediglich ein geringer Rest mit relativ kurzen Halbwertszeiten übrig.[4][15]

Sicherheitstechnische Analyse und Risikobewertung

Unter anderem zu den von TerraPower vorgeschlagenen Typen von Small Modular Reactor wurde im März 2021 ein umfangreiches Gutachten veröffentlicht, welches das Öko-Institut im Auftrag des Bundesamts für die Sicherheit der nuklearen Entsorgung erstellte. In der kritischen Gesamtbewertung heißt es: Keine der diskutierten Technologien ist derzeit und absehbar am Markt verfügbar. Gleichzeitig werden sie mit ähnlichen Versprechen wie zu den Reaktoren in den 1950ern und 1960er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts angepriesen.[17]
